The Billionaire’s Bet by Victoria Davies

The Billionaire's Bet Book Cover

Release Date: 1/23/17

Hailey Mitchel wants one thing. Her boss. The only problem is he’s never looked at her as more than a loyal employee. At least, not until his charming business rival, Caleb, drops into her life with an offer she can’t refuse. He’s willing to bet he can make her fall in love with him in a month, and if he’s wrong, he’ll help her find the keys to her boss’s heart.
Caleb Langston wants one thing. Revenge. Hailey is his ticket to finally evening the score with his old adversary. There’s just one problem. The more time he spends with her, the less he cares about his grand plans for payback. But love is always a gamble, and soon he’ll have to choose between his past and his future. And pray Hailey never discovers the secret he’s been hiding from her.
“I’m attracted to men of substance. Guess that rules you out.”
“But not my rival. Alec is your paragon of honor, isn’t he?”
“He’s an excellent man,” she agreed.
“One you just wish would walk over to your desk and sweep you off your feet, carrying you out into the sunset.”
“I’d probably break his back, and we’d both end up on the floor.”
His gaze raked down her body. “I’d be willing to risk it.”
“Luckily, you’ll never have to.”
His eyes returned to hers. “Why not just tell him?” he asked. “Confess your undying devotion and see what he does?”
She knew what he’s do. He’d get flustered trying to figure out how to tell her he didn’t return her affections. She wasn’t petite or blond, two things all his previous paramours had in common.
She wasn’t pursuing a career in acting, and she didn’t have trouble calculating the percentage of a tip. Worse, she didn’t come from old money the way Caleb and Alec did. She hadn’t grown up in that privileged world, didn’t understand the deeply ingrained rules. Alec had said more than once that when he settled down, it’d be to make a good alliance for his family. Keep all that lovely money in the right bloodlines.
No, she was nothing like the woman he would eventually fall in love with.
Not that logic stopped her from wishing for the impossible every now and then.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“All right.” Caleb straightened from the bar. “Why don’t I go ask him these questions and see what he thinks?”
Her fingers sank into his arm before he could move.
The movement had been a mistake. An admission. A certainty filled his expression that hadn’t been there a moment ago.
She shook her head, knowing she was steering toward a cliff. “What do you want?” What would buy his silence?
“I want many things,” he said, swirling the liquor in his glass. “Chief among them is you.”
“It’s just because you love the chase,” she said, rolling her eyes. “We’d never work.”
“Maybe,” he replied with a shrug. “But it’d be fun to try.”
“I’m not sleeping with you in order to keep your mouth shut.”
“I don’t remember asking you to.”
She resisted the urge to stamp her foot. “Then what are you asking?”
“I’m going to make you a bet,” he said, his eyes capturing hers. “Give me one month.”
“To do what?”
“Make you fall in love with me.”

About Worth the Wait:

I like to think of myself as a man of pleasure…

I enjoy a good pint of ale, being in the arms of a beautiful woman, and living by my own rules. The only thing I try to avoid? Commitment. And I’ve got a three-year success rate to prove it.

I wasn’t planning on Grace—the beautiful, funny, totally off-limits massage therapist who keeps popping up in my life. She’s on a six-month mission to rid her life of toxins. No alcohol. No red meat. And, yeah, no men. I’m talking full-on man cleanse.

I know I should walk away, but I can’t…and the only way to keep her in my life is to live by her rules. I’ll need to prove to a woman who’s lost all trust in men that I’m worthy of her love. And do it all without so much as a single kiss.

The only problem? If I win, I’ll lose the one thing I swore I’d never give up. My heart.

Here is the excerpt:

So this was his mysterious new neighbor.
3B had been empty for a while. When he’d made it back last night after a few
days away finalizing the pre-nup for a new client in New York, Mark had noticed the
light on from the street outside and the battered pickup next to his parking space.
He took advantage of the fact that she was busy searching her truck for jumper
cables to check her out without being noticed. Alice. The name suited her. Long,
platinum-blond hair pulled up in a ponytail looked natural—her skin was Nordic pale too,
and the eyes he’d caught a glimpse of were ice blue, like aquamarines. She barely came
up to his shoulder, and even the ugly overalls weren’t able to totally hide the hint of
curves he’d noticed when checking out the image of a woman holding the spanner on her
Mark frowned. He really shouldn’t be noticing his new neighbor that way. If she
was a mechanic, she probably had men hitting on her all day. Besides, he wasn’t in the
market for a new relationship. Extricating people from ill-judged romantic follies all day
had taught him to be cautious where attraction was concerned.
He pushed back his shirtsleeve and looked at his watch. Luckily, he’d left himself
plenty of time to make the meeting at his client’s office, and if a dead battery was all that
was wrong with the MG, he’d be on his way quickly.
His gaze lingered on Alice for a long moment as she popped the hood and then
grabbed red and black leads, attached one set to her battery terminals, and handed the
others to him.
Her hand brushed his, and a jolt of electricity raced up his arm.
Mark stared. What on earth?
Alice looked pointedly at the engine as he stood still, fixed to the spot by the
unexpected reaction to her touch.
Then her eyes softened. A small, sympathetic smile tilted the corners of her lips
upward. She stepped close, and took the leads from his unresisting fingers. “This one
goes here,” she said, fastening the clip in place, “and this one goes here.”
Mark nodded, still stunned. She thought he was so clueless about engines he
didn’t even know how to attach jumper cables.

Zander’s convinced his attractive assistant knows more than she’s willing to say, and if he can stop running long enough, he’ll find out exactly what she’s hiding. Lieutenant Marshal Mae Petros is determined to keep her CO safe. Before she tips her hand, however, Mae has to figure out if the alluring man she’s protecting is the real Captain Admiral Graydon. Or an alien shape-shifting imposter.

On the run and no one to trust…not even each other.

Captain Admiral Zander Graydon has seen a lot of action, but almost getting killed three times in one day is pushing it. Only the company of his new assistant, Lieutenant Marshal Mae Petros, makes things a little easier to swallow. Here’s the excerpt:

“Take her back down.” Sweat crept along his hairline, and he took a second to wipe at the gathering drips.

“Navs aren’t responding.” Apart from her words coming fast, Petros’s tone sounded mostly calm. Good, because he needed her to keep her head if they were going to get off this shuttle alive. The whole vessel was shaking hard enough now that anything not bolted down skittered across the grate floor. The groan of stressed metal was audible under the shrill chime of the emergency sirens.

He abandoned the shielding as a lost cause. The only play they had left was to disconnect the autopilot, which was taking them higher into the ether. Another few moments before they left the stratosphere altogether. Without the shielding, the craft would burn and implode almost in the same instant.

His breath came too short, chest too tight as the same error message kept blinking at him, telling him autopilot could not be disengaged. Frecking christ, the higher they got, the harder it would be coming down. And he had no doubt they were going down. Whether or not they got destroyed in the planet’s atmosphere before they crashed was still up for contention.

Swiveling the chair away from the all-but-useless control panel, he ducked down and pulled a section off the bottom of the console.

“What are you doing?” Petros demanded as he wrenched out a whole bunch of wiring.

“Manually disengaging autopilot. Until that’s off-line, we’ve got no hope of doing anything.” He skipped through several wires until he found the one he needed and yanked it clean out of the micro-crystal panel.

A new warning siren joined the dozen others already wailing, and the ship dropped sharply to the right, on the verge of going into an uncontrolled spiral. Zander’s stomach flipped up into his chest, and he grabbed hold of the chair’s armrest.

Petros pulled the physical flight control from out of its recess and jerked them to the left to counteract the ship’s listing. The angle of their hard decent lessened, but they were still going down on a bad, barely-in-control trajectory. Her face twisted into a grimace as she fought for control of the vessel, yet the shuttle hardly responded. They were beyond hope. There was only one way this crisis was going to end.

He tightened his harness and glanced over his shoulder to where his three crew were holding onto their seats in much the same way he had been. “We’re going down and it’s not going to be a soft landing. Brace for impact.”
